Start a Pet Shop

From Tips and Steps

{{#switch: |User talk = Thanks for starting an article on wikiHow! I just wanted to let you know that it's been categorized as a stub, meaning that it's a good outline (and we're glad you started it!), but still has some room to grow. We want to be sure that the article has enough step-by-step details in it so that a person reading it can accomplish this task from start to finish.

Do you have any more information you can add? You can also get details from other sites, as long as you put them in your own words and reference them. Either way, it's off to a good start. It'll be great to see how it develops! If there is anything I can do to help you expand the article or get around on wikiHow, please let me know!|Discussion = This template should be applied to the article itself, not its discussion page.|Image = {{#if:|{{|2=|date=2008-10-28}}|

If you are keen to start your own pet shop, here are some suggestions.

Steps

  1. Find a suitable shop for sale or rent. It is probably best to take on an existing pet store that is already stocked and has clientele already. This way, you can start instantly.
  2. Purchase all the supplies you need. You will need the following: Grooming products for animals, dog food, cat food, gerbil/hamster food, rabbit food, chewing toys safe for animals, cages, leashes, food and water bowls, etc. Come up with a reasonable price that is higher than the origianal so you can make a profit.
  3. Get your pets. You will need to know how to care for each type of animal you will sell. You will need to source your pets from reputable dealers who have regular inspections of their premises and who can provide vaccination papers etc. Sadly, many pet store animals come from irresponsible breeders. You should not support this cause by selling these animals. Another option is to take in cats and dogs from overcrowded animal shelters so they can get noticed and hopefully adopted. However, the shelter may not support pet stores. If you can convince them that you are trying to help, you'll be fine.
  4. Set up your pet shop. Get some racks, stack all off the supplies neatly, and be sure you put the food in one aisle, treats in another, toys in another etc. Or, you could organize by cat supplies, dog supplies, fish supplies, etc. The design will be dependent on the size of your store and its existing layout.
  5. Start advertising. Try the newspaper. Send out flyers or catalogs. How you can advertise depends on your budget and how much money you have left.
  6. Have a cashier/calculator so you won't have to add stuff. If you haven't already done so, set reasonable prices for your pets and supplies.
  7. Remember to feed, exercise, groom and clean all pets every day. Set up staff rosters for this.

Tips

  • If you are looking for a store to buy, a good place to start is your local mall because pet stores in malls tend to get noticed a lot.
  • When you buy cages for your animals, make sure they are big enough for the type of animal that will live in them. A lot of pet sstores have animals crammed into cages that they can hardly move in.
  • Please make sure you get animals from good breeders and not from puppy mills. This way, you are not supporting irresponsible and greedy breeders who care more about money that about their animals.
  • Be nice to your customers and show them around. You'll get a good reputation and make people happy, too.
