With the raging hangovers of Christmas and New Year a recent throbbing memory, many of us have vowed to cut back on the amount of booze we drink this year.

While young people are drinking less overall, for a percentage of the population alcohol isn’t just a social lubricant, it’s a coping mechanism.

One in three people who have a substance abuse problem also have symptoms of anxiety disorder, according to the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry.

The National Alcohol and Drug Research Centre has launched an online program to give young people the tools to cope with anxiety without having to turn to booze.
