Ever worried about putting the wrong thing in the microwave and possibly catching it on fire? Here's what not to put in your microwave so that you can keep your house from burning to the ground.

Steps

  1. Look at the item that you are cooking and see what the estimated cook time is. If there is no suggestion on how to cook the food item in a microwave, or if the item is not edible, it probably shouldn't be there in the first place.
  2. When it gives you a certain time to cook the food for, USE IT! Adding time to make it cook faster doesn't work!
  3. If the food item is wrapped in something shiny, that means it's foil. Foil + Microwave= BAD! Take off all foil before putting it in the microwave, unless the directions specifically say not to.
  4. While the food is cooking, don't walk away. Wait next to the microwave until it's done cooking because accidents happen all the time.

Tips

  • If you're unsure if what you're putting in the microwave or not, ask someone else who knows.
  • Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen somewhere. (And know how to use it!)
  • If you do start a fire, leave the microwave shut. If it's a small fire, use the fire extinguisher. If it has already spread to other items in the kitchen, then GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!
  • If you start a fire and need to get out of the house, use your cellphone (if you have it with you) or go next door to a neighbor (quickly!) and call 911.
  • Follow instructions on packets!

Warnings

  • If you decide not to follow the steps above, then you probably will start a fire.
  • If a fire starts, you could lose your house and all of your possessions.
