OBESE mothers are more likely to have children with developmental disorders, a new study shows. Obese mothers are 67 per cent more likely to have a child with autism than normal weight mothers without diabetes or hypertension, a new international study shows. The study, of about 1000 children from two to five, also found mums with diabetes were almost 67 per cent more likely to have a child with developmental disorders than healthy mothers. "Our finding that these maternal conditions may be linked with neurodevelopmental problems in children raises concerns and therefore may have serious public health implications," report author Paula Krakowiak says. Ms Krakowiak, from the University of California's Davis MIND Institute, says diabetes and obesity do not cause autism, but the results suggested that those conditions adversely affected foetal development.
