Establish Independence While Living in Family Home As a Young Adult

Are you college student who can't afford to move out of home? Do your parents think that because you live at home, you are still a kid?

Steps

If you can, get your driver's license. Even if you don't have a car, this can help to establish your independence, especially if you can borrow your parent's or older sibling's car.
Pay for as much as you can. Don't rely on your parents for every little thing if you don't have to. Being responsible for yourself makes you seem like more of an adult than if you expect your parents to look after you.
Clean your room. If you don't already keep your room reasonably clean and tidy, you should start. This makes your parents feel like you are more responsible, and they will treat you as such.
Offer to babysit, do housework, etc in exchange for extra money, or to borrow the car, anything to help you be independent.
If you are at college, let your parents see that you are studying hard and making your best effort to achieve your goals. This way, they don't just think that you are lazy because you still live at home.

Just remember: One day, you will graduate, get a real job and move on with your life. You may look back on it & realize how comfortable it was.
Try not to argue or get angry with your parents. They don't usually mean to treat you like a kid. You will also make yourself seem more immature if you have a tantrum.
Ask yourself, in a few years, once you've graduated, will it really matter all that much that your parents treated you like a kid? Don't get too concerned about it.
As you mature, your parents need time to realize you are capable of taking care of yourself. Loving & protecting your children is a natural instinct. It is difficult for a parent to learn to stop. Give them time!*
